Royal
Royal is closest in appearance to the variety Emerald. Royal generally has fair-to-good winter hardiness. It has an intermediate to rapid growth rate, and has an intermediate water use requirement, Royal produces little thatch with optimum mowing hight of 1 to 5mm. Royal will generally grow to cover a plot area in 10-12 months growing time when 7 mm X 10 mm plugs are planted on 30 mm centers or by planting sprigs.
Royal spreads by both rhizome and stolon growth. Stolons of Royal have a mean internode length of 23.2 mm between the second and third nodes, with a mean internode width and node diameter of 1.42 mm. Leaf blades of Royal are rolled in the bud, and are flat and stiff. The blade length of Royal is 59.4 mm and 1.53 mm in width, shorter and narroer than 'El Toro' and Meyer.
